Utah has signed on to a consortium of 40+ states that are working jointly towards developing and adopting a common set of K-12 standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts. The Utah State Board of Education voted 10/1/10 to adopt these standards and the Utah State Office of Education will begin work towards implementation. The implementation plan will be 6th, 8th, and 9th grade math implementation for 2011-2012 school year (see USOE website for schedule of implementation). The following grades K-5, 7, and 10 will implement the Math Common Core State Standards (MCCSS) in the fall of 2012. Eleventh grade will implement MCCSS in the fall of 2013.
Please note that the state assessments will continue to be based on the currently operational 2007 Mathematics Core. Common Core Assessments will be available in the spring of 2014.
Most students enter school confident in their own abilities; they are curious and eager to learn more. They make sense of the world by reasoning and problem solving. Young students are active, resourceful individuals who construct, modify, and integrate ideas by interacting with the physical world as well as with peers and adults. They learn by doing, collaborating, and sharing their ideas.
