The teaching strategies used supports students in learning the concepts and skills for the subject area and develop the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in another target language.<\/p>\n<p>The goals are for the students to develop literacy skills in both English and the target language while attaining academic achievement that is at or above their grade level as measured by Utah Core Testing.<\/p>\n<p>More than 40 years of research consistently documents the power of immersion programs to help students attain high levels of second language proficiency. No other type of instruction, short of living in a second-language environment, is as successful.<\/p>\n<p>Young children especially thrive in this type of instructional environment.\u00a0 Additionally, language immersion is also the least expensive way to deliver second-language instruction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>What are the Benefits of the Dual Immersion Program?<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7F-0kFDctsk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dual Immersion Video<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic\/Educational\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Perform at or above their non-immersion peers on standardized tests administered in English<\/li>\n<li>Achieve high levels of functional proficiency in the immersion language, i.e. display fluency, confidence, and native-like levels of comprehension in the immersion language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive\n<ul>\n<li>Achieve metalinguistic awareness<\/li>\n<li>Achieve high levels of proficiency\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Attain greater cognitive flexibility and better non-verbal problem-solving abilities<\/li>\n<li>Outperform monolinguals in the areas of divergent thinking, pattern recognition, and problem-solving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sociocultural\n<ul>\n<li>Allows access to foreign media, literature, and art<\/li>\n<li>Helps students understand, navigate, and enjoy intercultural differences<\/li>\n<li>Leads to respect, positive attitudes, and an appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity<\/li>\n<li>Helps students better understand their own culture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Economic\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>World language abilities are increasingly important to national security, delivery of health care, economic competitiveness, and law enforcement in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>Future high-level, high-paying jobs will require competence in more than one language.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Parents&#8217; Responsibilities\n<ul>\n<li>Commit to long-term participation in the dual immersion program (a completed Parent Commitment form must be completed and submitted upon acceptance to a dual immersion program).<\/li>\n<li>Develop an understanding of dual immersion education.<\/li>\n<li>Read with your child in English 20-30 minutes daily.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage the use of the target language outside of school hours.<\/li>\n<li>Provide community support and, when possible, volunteer.<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy the challenges, celebrate the results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>How do I apply for the Dual Immersion Program?<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>Entering Dual Immersion is done in one of two ways in Washington County School District\u2026<\/p>\n<p>#1-\u00a0First Grade Lottery\u00a0(if your student is not selected they can go on a waiting list)<\/p>\n<p>#2-\u00a0New move-ins\u00a0need to contact the school they plan to attend to see if space is available and show proficiency in the language. In some cases, the student may be placed on a waitlist depending on the room in the program.<\/p>\n<p>Application or Wait-list does not imply or guarantee admission to any Dual Immersion Program.
