Augmentative / Assistive Technology

Washington County School District (WCSD) is firmly committed to supporting students with disabilities by integrating assistive technology (AT) into individualized education plans. Through its Special Education Department, WCSD values evidence-based practices that enhance access to the core curriculum, promote independence, and prepare students for lifelong success in alignment with IDEA mandates.

A key asset in this effort is the Utah Assistive Technology Team (UATT) embedded within WCSD. This interdisciplinary team includes speech‑language pathologists, occupational therapists, special education teachers and behavior specialists—all collaborating to support student needs.

WCSD & UATT Support Students:

  • Individualized AT Assessments & Trials: Following a formal referral, the team conducts evaluations to match students with appropriate tools—ranging from low‑tech aids (e.g., communication boards) to high‑tech solutions (e.g., speech‑to‑text, AAC devices). Trials are structured around IEP or 504 meetings using frameworks like SETT to gauge effectiveness before full implementation.
  • Training & Ongoing Coaching: UATT equips students, families, educators, and service providers with training on device use, programming core vocabulary, and maximizing accessibility features (e.g., speech-to-text via Google Docs). They ensure technology remains a seamless part of classroom instruction
  • Device Management & Maintenance: From selecting and customizing to maintaining and replacing devices, the team ensures tools stay functional and tailored, minimizing disruptions to learning.
