H1N1 Flu Virus Update

On 6/11/2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) changed the alert level of the H1N1 flu pandemic from 5 to 6. The following statement from the Southwest Public Health Department is in response to this change:

“The WHO pandemic phase designation is based on geographic spread of the influenza virus, not on the severity of the illness… Although the virus continues to spread, the disease continues to be a mild one for the most part. Your Health Officer, Dr. David Blodgett, is not seeing significant changes in the virus in our area.

Your Local Health Department has been preparing for a pandemic for many years and we have been implementing our pandemic response plan since the National Public Health Emergency was declared in April.  This includes sharing messages to mitigate the spread of the disease and to encourage people to get prepared in case the H1N1 changes over the next few months and become more virulent.

From the beginning, we have assumed an aggressive public health approach to this outbreak, and we will continue to encourage good health practices. We will continue to monitor and track the hospitalized cases and to encourage people who are ill to stay home if they feel sick so as not to spread the disease…

We are working hard to be prepared for what happens in the fall with H1N1 when the traditional flu season starts.  Please continue to wash your hands frequently.  Try not to touch your eyes, nose or month.  Cover your cough with your sleeve or a tissue then throw it away and wash your hands.  Stay home if you are ill.  Wash down door knobs, phones, remote controls, computer keyboards or other objects that may be shared by others, try to stay as healthy as possible by eating well, getting adequate rest and exercise.”

Please continue to refer to this website for current information relative to school status and H1N1.
